Starting in 2000 with their family orchard (Vintage Virginia Apples) in nearby North Garden, the Shelton family has grown their specialty orchard to include some 250 varieties of apples. That led to the opening of Albemarle Ciderwoks in July 2009, where they now produce a dozen different varieties of hard cider. Their tasting room sits overlooking the rolling hills, just south of Charlottesville.  They are open for tasting every day between July and December, and Wednesday through Sunday from January to June.

Blue Toad’s “Cidery at High View Farm” production facility and tasting room is located just south of us in Roseland, at the base of Wintergreen Mountain. They use a cider blend of three to four different apple varieties grown in areas near Western New York and locally in Tyro, Virginia. In addition to their flagship flavors, they are constantly experimenting with seasonal varieties such as Hopped Toad and Black Cherry. Come visit them in their Roseland tasting room or their pub & tasting room in Afton, Thursday through Monday.

The flagship Bold Rock Cider Barn, located just a few miles to our south opened in August 2014, is a spectacular, rustic, reclaimed timber frame barn overlooking the Rockfish River. Their patio and picnic areas offer lovely views of the Rockfish Valley, occasionally highlighted by live music. Bold Rock offers complimentary daily tastings and tours as well as pints, flights and a selection of delicious sandwiches. You can also take a tour of the cider bottling line. Their ever-expanding line of ciders, from Peach to Honeydew, utilizes locally-sourced apples.

Just a mile to our south, Silverback Distillery produces a line of spirits that includes Vodka, Gin, Grain Spirit and Rye Whiskey (Bourbon is coming soon). Silverback proudly incorporates “green” distilling and production methods, including the use of geothermal technologies, which allow them to minimize their energy usage and environmental impact. Visit their tasting room where you can select from a menu of straight pours or mixer cocktails to sample their line of spirits (Virginia law allows them to serve a maximum of 3 oz. of alcohol to any individual per day).

VDC is all about whisky. Their flagship Virginia Highland Malt is imported from the Scottish Highlands and then finished in port-style wine casks from local wineries. They also produce a Cider Barrel malt whisky and have a Virginia Single Malt currently aging in bourbon casks. Their visitor center is open daily for tastings and production facility tours. The “Virginia Whisky Experience” Tour may be booked online, although walk-in tours are also offered based on availability. Tours are an hour and fifteen minutes, and range from $12 to $32 depending on the tastings selected.
