The Three Fs of Fall in Afton
Fall has arrived, and there’s already a hint of change in the leaves here in Afton, Virginia. The shifting of seasons is always an exciting time, as it brings about something new and something to celebrate. Fall is no exception. With the arrival of pumpkin spice lattes and Halloween décor also comes a few of our favorite seasonal aspects of autumn in the area—the Three Fs of Fall in Afton.
The Foliage: The obviously has to be at the top! Whether you’re sipping a glass of wine at Afton Mountain Vineyards, or simply relaxing on the porch at Afton Mountain B&B, Nelson County is an absolutely amazing portrait of autumn. Because Afton tucked away in the Virginia mountains with close proximity to Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park, we have a front row seat to peak leaf season, and you definitely don’t want to miss out. (Stay up-to-date with the seasonal changes by calling the Forest Service Fall Color Hotline: 800.354.4595. Press "8" for the Southern States report.)
The Festivals: We certainly know how to herald in the season with some local revelry. Explore the beautiful pieces from 150 fine artists and artisans along downtown Waynesboro for the annual Fall Foliage Art Show on October 8-9, 2016. Step back in time and overseas with a Bavarian-themed celebration at the Frontier Culture Museum’s Oktoberfest celebration on October 8, 2016 in Staunton, VA. Or you can always stick around the Afton area and enjoy an entire week of Oktoberfest festivities at Blue Mountain Brewery, October 1-9, 2016.
The Fantastic Weather: Okay, so we cheated on this one a little bit, but the fall weather is so perfect that we had to find a way to include it under the “f” category! We’re well past the sticky heat of summer but not yet close enough to winter that we’re frozen in place with our teeth chattering. The weather is calm, mild, and absolutely beautiful—the perfect complement to the foliage.
