Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden at Monticello
“Reflecting the genius and versatility of its creator, Jefferson's Monticello is a monument to a scrupulous interest in architecture, landscaping, agriculture, and domestic comforts” (NPS). There is no doubt that Monticello is an aesthetic wonder, not only in its architecture, but also in its gardens. If you’re interested in experiencing a garden that boasts a verdant link to American history, then Monticello’s Revolutionary Garden Tour is the perfect opportunity.
Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden is stunning, a reflection of his belief that “the greatest service which can be rendered any country is to add a useful plant to its culture” (Monticello.org). The original fruits and vegetables to which Jefferson tended in the early 19th century remain in the garden today, flourishing and available for your viewing pleasure.
The Revolutionary Garden Tour takes place every Wednesday and Saturday through October 26. From 9 a.m. – 11 a.m., “Visitors participates in seasonal gardening activities, such as planting, harvesting, and sampling spring crops ranging from asparagus to baby root vegetables” (Monticello.org).
Besides the two-hour guided exploration of the gardens, a number of other activities are included in the tour:
- A “Meet the Gardener” segment
- House Tour at 11:30 (immediately after your tour of the Revolutionary Garden)
- Gardens and Grounds Tour
- Slavery at Monticello Tour
Afton Mountain Bed and Breakfast is around thirty minutes from Monticello, and the Revolutionary Garden Tour is a worthwhile excursion for those interested in history and gardening. (Plus, with Independence Day happening soon, what better place is there to explore than the home of the Father of the Declaration of Independence?) We also offer a guest package that includes accommodations with us, passes for the Monticello house and gardens tour, and mid-day fare at Michie Tavern, located right next to Monticello.
