Sample Starr Hill’s German Smoke Beer
“It’s no secret that [Starr Hill’s] mission is The Gift of Great Beer. Every culture in the world has a fermented, cereal grain beverage that people use to sit around and talk. I’m a steward of the product that enhances this thing we call life.” --Mark Thompson, Master Brewer
It’s no secret that we here at Afton Mountain Bed and Breakfast enjoy our local breweries. A good number of these breweries boast award-winning beverages, and Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet, Virginia certainly upholds all expectations. From the gold medal Jomo Lager to the silver medal Monticello Reserve Ale, Starr Hill’s awards are numerous and their beers excellent.
One particular beer that earned a silver medal at both the 2008 and 2011 Great American Beer Festival is the Smoke Out Rauch Beer, a “medium-bodied German-style smoke beer.” Starr Hill describes Smoke Out as “malty with a slight sweetness that gives way to an aroma of smoke, bacon and campfire. The beer is fermented at cold temperatures with Bavarian Lager yeast to round out its strong flavor.” We certainly think this brew sounds fantastic. Can you really go wrong with the combination of beer and bacon? (Nope.)
Smoke Out had a limited release in 2008, and now you have the opportunity to try out this new All Access brew at the Smoke Out Release Party on June 29, 2013. The release party begins at 11 a.m. in the Starr Hill Tasting Room, and the tasting fee is $5. Smoke Out will be out in stores on July 1, 2013, so the release party is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a taste of it beforehand.
