Ragged Branch Distillery
Charlottesville’s newest distillery, Ragged Branch, is a nod to the ragged mountains of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding it. Situated on a knoll amongst the mountains Southwest of Charlottesville, the view from the tasting room is exquisite. The view is not the only thing to love about Ragged Branch, though. From beginning to end, their bourbon is independently, locally made:
“Ragged Branch has not purchased alcohol from other distillers nor has it sold un-aged spirits. Each bottle of Ragged Branch Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey was painstakingly distilled and patiently aged at Ragged Branch.” –raggedbranch.com
Their process is firmly grounded in their commitment to representing “a true taste of the commonwealth.” Their locally grown crops are transformed first into a hardy mash, then distilled and aged into a beautiful bourbon. The leftover mash feeds their cattle, which is the other part of Ragged Branch: Bourbon Beef.
That’s right, Ragged Branch offers hamburger and prime cuts from their cattle. Ragged Branch houses their 50-100 head herd on nearby Pounding Branch Farm and employs three Agricultural experts who oversee the entire process.
Ragged range is building their repertoire, currently serving two Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskeys. One whiskey is a wheat based bourbon, the other is a rye based bourbon. Look for the upcoming release of their cask strength “Cowboy Cut,” and eventually their Straight Rye Whiskey, once it finishes aging in their rickhouse.
Stop by their tasting room Thursday-Sunday anytime between noon and 6pm.
