Pick Your Own Fruit
Let’s say it’s going to be a hot day in Virginia, the sort of day where the air is thick with humidity and your clothing sticks to your perspiring skin. You’ve taken a dip in the Afton Mountain Bed & Breakfast pool, dried off and dressed, and you’re now perched on our back porch, feeling a bit parched and peckish. Luckily for you, you spent the cool of the morning picking your own fruit from our local orchards and farms. Whether you prefer strawberries, blueberries, apples, peaches, cherries, or all of the above, you’ll find them all at Seamans’ Orchard, Critzer Family Farm, and Chiles Peach Orchard, and these fruits are just waiting to be picked.
Seamans’ Orchard in Roseland dates all the way back to 1933 when the Lea brothers first began farming the land. Right now, it's apple harvest season, and as October arrives in a few weeks, the orchard will offer pumpkins and apple butter as well. Don't miss out on the Pick-Your-Own-Apples event, September 17th and 18th, 2016!
Critzer Family Farm: Five generations of Critzers have cultivated this Afton, VA, creating a sustainable agricultural environment. The farm is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. To find out current picking conditions and farm updates, call the Critzer “Berry Line” at 540-456-4772. Chiles Peach Orchard in Crozet is known for their sweet, juicy peaches along with their strawberries, sweet cherries, pumpkins, and apples. Give the orchard a call at 434.823.1583 to find out what current fruits they offer for picking. (Fresh fruit isn’t Chiles’ only offering; visit their Ice Cream Parlor for homemade waffle cones, strawberry shortcake, and more.)
