More Reasons to Visit Jefferson's Monticello
If you’re not coming for the beautiful views, chances are you’re headed to the Blue Ridge Mountains for the amazing area attractions. For good reason, too. There are theaters, shopping, and museums galore. Perhaps the most famously popular attraction in the area is Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.
“Monticello is the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson—designed and redesigned and built and rebuilt for more than forty years—and its gardens were a botanic showpiece, a source of food, and an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world.”
The buildings and grounds are a testament to the founding father’s ingenuity as well as an insightful peek into life at the time of our nation’s founding. Monticello is ever changing, offering new exhibits, information, and events to occupy everyone. Here’s some of the latest news surrounding Jefferson’s property.
The Inclusion of Sally Hemmings. One of the great paradoxes of early America, was the high value on liberty espoused by men like Thomas Jefferson while they owned slaves. Sally Hemmings’ name has become famous as a reminder of this flaw and the new exhibit, Hemmings Family Tour, promises to honor the struggles of her and her descendants. Along with a guided Slavery at Monticello Tour, the Hemmings Family Tour also includes a special look at newly opened quarters Hemmings and her family occupied in Monticello.
Lace up for the April 29th challenge and climb the 1,282-foot peak for a panoramic view of the entire area! If you haven’t explored the trails at Monticello, now is the time. This annual 5K is perfect for your weekend getaway.
