Mardis Gras Merriment, 2014
Ah, Mardis Gras (“Fat Tuesday,” as the literal translation goes). It is a time of indulgence—or overindulgence—just before the traditional fasting of the season of Lent. Traditionally it is a time of celebration, or parades and jazz music, masks and elaborate costumes, and bright flashes of purple, green, and gold. (A bit of trivia for you: Did you know that each Mardis Gras color is symbolic? “Purple Represents Justice. Green Represents Faith. And Gold Represents Power.”
Nelson County, Virginia is certainly not New Orleans, but we know how to throw a Mardis Gras party, and a few local places are inviting you to join in the merrymaking:
Mardis Gras Madness Fun Run at Devils Backbone: On February 22, 2014, trek up to Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Roseland, VA for a 5k run, a 10k run, and a 2-person 10k relay. Post-run partying includes gumbo, Devils Backbone brews, and the warmth of the firepits. Mardis Gras costumes are encouraged, so break out the masks and beads and join in the revelry. Wintergreen Resort offers Mardis Gras activities from February 28- March 2, 2014, presented by Wintergreen Adaptive Sports. From a costume parade to live music to the Syncro skiing event, the weekend will be packed with adventure, activity, and of course, breathtaking views. Events are open to skiers and snowboarders of various ages and levels of experience.
If breweries and skiing aren’t really your “thing,” then maybe a Mardis Gras Dance is more to your liking. Join fellow dancers at the Massies Mill Ruritan Club on February 22, 2014. From 8 P.M. to 1 A.M., dance your hearts out to the live instrumentations of City Limits, a local band. The dance is BYOB with light refreshments provided.
