Hop on Over to the Blue Toad

The Blue Toad is a relatively new pub located in Afton. It is owned and run by Todd Rath, and we at Afton Mountain Bed & Breakfast highly recommend it to our guests. The menu has a wide variety of foods that range from our favorites like the Irish Sheppard’s Pie and the Fish & Chips to our guests’ much-loved Summer Strawberry Chicken Salad. Top it all off with an unbelievable selection of beers from all over the country.

The delicious food, casual atmosphere, and weekend displays of local musicians make for an incredibly enjoyable experience. Also, because it’s only a mile away from our B&B, it’s a convenient eatery for guests who would like a close place to dine. However, if you’d prefer to eat in the comfort of the inn, the Blue Toad delivers!

You may be wondering about the name of the pub. The Blue Toad is an interesting name for an establishment, to be sure. However, not only does it serve its purpose as attention-grabbing and memorable, it also makes for interesting conversation with the owner’s amusing backstory.  The “Blue” in the name comes, of course, from the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, but how about the “Toad”? As the Blue Toad website states, “It was all because of a simple handwriting error made by Momma Toad years ago. Toad’s real name is Todd… So when Todd’s Mother was filling out the paperwork for his birth certificate, that first 'd' in his name came up a little short, leaving the Doctors and the great state of New York thinking the first name of this new little fella was Toad.”
