Friends of 151, Nelson County, Virginia

Afton, Virginia and her neighboring towns comprise a picturesque portion of our beautiful Commonwealth. With a series of mountain roads, valley views, and traveler trails, a huge part of Afton’s beauty relies on the upkeep. That’s why we would like to recognize a newly formed volunteer organization that offers its time and energy to keep Nelson 151 in its pristine, scenic condition—Friends of 151.

According to their Facebook page, Friends of 151 “aims to bring Community Members and Businesses together to keep our scenic highway clear of litter and debris.” The latest of their efforts included a Clean-Up Day a couple of weeks ago, where the group met at the Blue Toad Hard Cider Pub in Afton and spent the morning ridding the roads of trash.

So, how did this local cleanup group come to be? It’s all thanks to an individual named John Howard, Peter and Tracy Barry, and Lisa Davis. After meeting together at Trager Brothers Coffee at the Rockfish Valley Community Center, these friends created their Facebook page, acquired a permit, signs, trash bags, and vests from the Virginia Department of Transportation, and invited others to join them in their efforts.
