Buying Local in Afton, VA
“Most produce in the US is picked 4 to 7 days before being placed on supermarket shelves, and is shipped for an average of 1500 miles before being sold. And this is when taking into account only US grown products” (Local Harvest). This certainly sounds much less appealing than buying fresh produce from local farms, which is where we at Afton Mountain Bed & Breakfast acquire ingredients for our breakfasts.
One place that we highly recommend is the locally owned and run Tall Cotton Farm in Afton, VA. Tall Cotton Farm produces “USDA inspected grass-fed and finished beef, chicken, turkeys and pork,” and all of their animals are pasture-raised without added antibiotics or hormones. Tall Cotton Farm sells at local markets such as Rockfish Valley Community Center Market and Nelson Farmers Market; the latter of these is where we purchase our Tall Cotton Farm sausage and eggs.
Nelson Farmers Market is an accumulation of local, farm-fresh produce, and it is open every Saturday from May through October, 8 a.m. to noon. Around thirty vendors display their goods for sale, and while we mainly purchase produce for our guests, one can also find baked goods, garden plant, fresh flowers, arts and crafts, and more.
One can always expect to find quality at Tall Cotton Farm and the Nelson Farmers Market, and we believe that this quality translates seamlessly to our breakfasts. Click here if you’re interested in reading more about the overall benefits of buying local.
