5 Autumn Adventures Around Afton
As the heat of summer moves us into the month of August, many people begin to anticipate the arrival of fall and all of its enjoyable seasonal elements—pumpkin spice flavors, colorful foliage, harvest festivals, Halloween parties, fuzzy scarves, and a general crispness in the air. Afton, Virginia is a particularly pleasant area in which to celebrate the arrival of autumn. From horseback riding to cider tasting, we have a number of upcoming activities to enhance your fall stay at Afton Mountain Bed & Breakfast.
1. Monticello’s Heritage Harvest Festival, September 10, 2016. Visit this hugely popular annual event at Thomas Jefferson’s historic home. You’ll have the chance to take part in seed swaps, free workshops, demonstrations, beer tastings, food vendors and more.
2. Rebel’s Run at Afton Mountain. Take in the sights and sounds of autumn in Afton from the back of a horse. Enjoy a Scenic Ride up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a Vineyard Tour to Afton Mountain Vineyards, a Summit Ride with a stunning view of the Rockfish Valley, or a Valley Ride right through woods and pastures of Rockfish Valley.
3. Spartan Race at Wintergreen, September 24-25, 2016. Whether you’re testing your endurance as a participant or you’re cheering on the competitors from the sidelines, this challenging race is a yearly favorite in the area. With 25 obstacles over some tough terrain, this is a super athletic race that is fun to watch and to run.
4. Bold Rock Hard Cider. Apple cider is always a favorite fall drink, so why not give yours an extra kick? Bold Rock’s beverages are made from Blue Ridge Mountain apples by cider makers in both Virginia and North Carolina. Sip your way through the tartness of Granny Smith Cider, the smoothness of Draft Amber Apple, the bold finish of the Vintage Dry, and other unique ciders.
5. Humpback Rocks. There’s a reason this short-but-challenging trail is such a popular trek among both casual and dedicated hikers. The rocky overlook at the top of the trail is worth the steep climb, peering out over the Valley and awarding hikers with an incredible array of fall hues.
