4 Stops Along the Nelson Scenic Loop

Nelson County, Virginia is historic, scenic, and home to a variety of activities from wine tasting to hiking trails and everything in between. The Nelson Scenic Loop is a wonderful compilation of some of the best stops in the area, so keep reading to discover a few of our favorites. (Please note that some of the stops listed on the Scenic Loop website may be closed or no longer in business.)

The Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail: Open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, this picturesque trail follows a former railway that was built in 1917 to haul chestnut timber. Now the pathway will take travelers to and from Piney River (Patrick Henry Highway) and the Tye River Depot, accompanied by bridges, old rail cars, wildlife, and various other Virginia views. Dodd Cabin, Roseland: With a history that dates back to 1772, this relic of the past first began as a land grant from King George III. Sometime around 1781-1800, John Dodd purchased the land and built his cabin, which was later occupied by Civil War veteran William A. Dodd, and then finally by Emma Dodd in 1955. Now you can explore this restored cabin and its fascinating history on Sundays from 2pm to 5pm, July to October.

St. Mary’s Wilderness, Raphine: As with many of the stops along the Nelson Scenic Loops, St. Mary’s Wilderness is rich in history. Once an old once an iron ore mining area, this popular circuit hike boasts waterfalls, vistas, meadows, wetlands, and   swimming holes. Depending on the time of year and the weather, you may have to walk through some water, so be sure to bring waterproof shoes (or a friend who is willing to give you a piggyback ride).

Saunders Brothers Nursery, Orchard, & Farm Market, Piney River: Way back in 1915, five brothers decided to start a farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which eventually blossomed into a nursery, an orchard, and a farm market. From roses and flowering shrubs to fresh peaches and apples, Saunders Brothers produces high-quality local offerings. Stop by for a bite of peach ice cream, a tour of the farm antique museum, and a peek at their produce.
