Three Notch'd Grill

One luxury we have as bed & breakfast owners in the Charlottesville area is the wide variety of fantastic local restaurants that surround us. After all, what's a vacation or a weekend getaway without a great dining experience? One restaurant that we're always happy to recommend is Three Notch'd Grill, located about 10 miles away in the nearby quaint town of Crozet. They offer a full variety of highly creative, American fare in a casual, quiet atmosphere with extremely attentive service.

They describe their food as “eclectic contemporary”, but we just call it consistently delicious.  Our guests rave about the wide selection of menu items, starting with a full line of appetizers, salads and soups, and featuring an array of pasta, meat, seafood and vegetarian entree options. We also like their selection of sandwiches as a lighter late-night alternative. The owners and chefs at Three Notch'd Grill focus on incorporating locally-sourced ingredients into their dishes whenever possible. Since we also pride ourselves on using “fresh & local”, we give them bonus points for that.

Their wine list includes favorites from all around the world, the U.S. West Coast and of course, a few from right here in the heart of Virginia's wine country.  Even their beer list has a local flavor, including select brews -including our favorite, Jomo Lager - from Starr Hill Brewery, located just down the road from the restaurant.

What's the deal with the name? Well, back when Virginia was just a colony - you know, before interstate highways and before Roast Chicken Breast Stuffed with Chorizo, Jalapenos, Cheddar & Red Chile Sauce* - there was no established route for travelers to follow west from Richmond to the Shenandoah Valley.  So a trail was created, first by Indians, and then later by colonialists, by cutting three notches into the trunks of trees along the route. By following this trail of distinctive trees (kind of like the one in their sign pictured above), travelers could find their way across Virginia, past Charlottesville, over the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Valley (and back again). This route later evolved into "Three Notch'd Road", which runs right in front of the restaurant.
